General Information for the Applicant

The information you provide on your application form will help to determine whether your presentation will be accepted in the symposium program. Please make sure that you read through all of the information thoroughly and complete in full all of the required sections.

The Scientific Program Committee has framed a set of principles guiding the work of the symposium. It understands Victimology as the scientific study of victims, of victimizations and of the reactions to both, on the individual, institutional and societal level. All contributions to the symposium must be related to one of the victimological approaches and to the general theme.

The general theme, "Victimology and Human Security," creates room for contributions in the field of General and Special Victimology, as well as for contributions relating to victimizations by Human Rights violations, including crime. In this framework, papers will mainly deal with the nine sub-themes.

The sub-theme list is not intended to be exhaustive or exclusive. Because the symposium will promote and reflect new and timely developments, other related topics may be addressed such as post-traumatic stress disorder, restorative justice, restitution, compensation, victim services, witness assistance and so on. The Scientific Program Committee will either include those topics under one of the existing sub-themes or possibly develop a new theme from the submissions. However, paper presentations are generally expected to address one of the nine sub-themes listed above.

If you intend to make more than one presentation, please fill out a separate application form for each presentation. Below you will find important presentation-specific details in the linked files.

In all linked texts, the term "WSV" refers to the World Society of Victimology as well as its partner in organizing the symposium, Tokiwa University.

Submissions for Oral and Poster Presentations

If you would like to make a presentation at the symposium you must first submit an abstract using the Abstract Submission Form linked below. When filling out the form, please select the type of presentation that you would like to make (the choices are "oral presentation" and "paper presentation"). Please also attach your paper abstract to your submission form before submitting it. (It is suggested that you use the abstract template provided in the below link, "Template.") Please note that abstract texts should not exceed 200 words.

Unless otherwise specified in the submission form, presentations will be arranged into parallel sessions by the Scientific Program Committee. If you would like to organize a parallel session on a given topic or theme, please see the below section, "Application for Organizing a Parallel Session," for details.

Deadline for abstract submission: July 6, 2009

Abstract submission has been closed.

After submitting an abstract, you will first be sent a confirmation email by the organizers. You will then receive an official notice of acceptance from the Scientific Program Committee after your abstract has been reviewed and accepted into the program. If the Scientific Program Committee determines that your abstract will require adjustments before it can be accepted into the program, you will be contacted directly from the Chair of the Scientific Program Committee to discuss the changes that are needed. Upon acceptance of your abstract, you are encouraged to submit your full paper.

Finally, please note that all papers/abstracts submitted must be original contributions and must not have been published elsewhere previously.

Submitting a full-paper

All participants are encouraged to send a full paper in English before commencement of the symposium; however, it may be difficult for some participants to hand in a full paper by this time. This should not prevent you from sending in an abstract. If your contribution is considered for publication after the symposium, we will then ask you to send us a full paper at that time.

Paper format:

The full paper should be a maximum of 20 pages in length, double spaced, and written in size 12, Times New Roman font. More specific formatting details can be found here.

Copyright

The presenter(s) agree(s) that with the acceptance of the paper by the Chair of the Scientific Program Committee, the WSV holds the copyright for the publication of the paper. Until the decision to publish the paper is made, the copyright of all papers will rest with the WSV.

Student Paper Competition

The aim of the WSV student paper competition is to encourage individual university-level full-time enrolled students of all levels to write original scholarly papers with relevance to Victimology. Each candidate must submit papers that have not been previously published and, if selected as a winner, must permit the WSV to publish their paper in one of its publications giving the copyright to the WSV. The papers must be in English, referenced, typewritten not to exceed 20 pages double-spaced (font size 10, Times New Roman, in Microsoft Word). Each paper must be accompanied with official proof of full time enrollment.

Student Paper Submission Deadline: 17:00, July 15, 2009 (Japan Standard Time)

After submission, the papers will be evaluated by a panel of judges representing different parts of the world. The winners will be announced at the 2009 WSV Symposium Awards Presentation program. The first prize winner will be awarded $1,000 and a three-year WSV student membership; the second prize winner will be awarded $500 and a three-year WSV student membership. Papers presented at the 2009 symposium may also be submitted for the paper competition; however, students are asked to note the differences in the required formats (i.e. different font sizes) for the two and adjust their submissions accordingly.

Before submitting, please see the detailed guidelines here. Submissions/inquiries should be made to Prof. Dr. K. Chockalingam, Chair, Awards Committee of the WSV (Email: profkcindia@yahoo.com).
