Common Goals for Our Future

[1]　The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of universal goals to make a better world. All of the member states at the 2015 United Nations General Assembly agreed upon them. The SDGs clarified the global challenges that both developed and developing countries need to tackle in three areas: the environment, society, and the economy. Importantly, these goals were not simply created by government organizations, but by a diverse range of groups including companies, NPOs, minorities, and young people. The SDGs represent everyone and are based on the collective voices of people from around the world.


[2]　The SDGs aim to change our future and reflect a vision of our world in 2030. They are made up of seventeen goals and 169 targets for achieving them. Each goal focuses on a different important issue such as climate change or poverty. It may seem impossible to tackle so many different problems on such a large scale. However, if we view the SDGs from “global perspectives,” we can see that they all share certain characteristics. Let’s take a look at three key perspectives and how they relate to the SDGs.


[3]　The first perspective is making connections. All of the goals outlined in the SDGs are interconnected with each other. This means that rather than trying to tackle all seventeen goals at the same time, we can start with one and use it as a gateway for dealing with other issues. The problems facing our world are very complex, so, first, we need to understand how they are related to each other on a global scale. We also need to be aware of how they connect with our daily lives. In other words, in order to solve the world’s problems, we cannot think of ourselves as passive outsiders. Instead, we should take daily steps toward a solution.


[4]　The second perspective is recognizing differences. The SDGs aim for a world without discrimination in which “no one is left behind.” They take a holistic approach in which everyone from you and me to different vulnerable groups, animals, and even the environment is included. To achieve this, we should try to accept diversity and recognize that there is more than one perspective on any single issue. There is no single “right answer” to any of the problems identified by the SDGs. Different possible answers will be created as we tackle the world’s biggest problems together.


[5]　The final perspective is looking to the future. According to the SDGs, just learning about the issues is not enough. To change the world, we need to reflect on our own individual lifestyles and values. The problems we are facing are difficult to overcome, so people from different backgrounds must come together to work toward their common goals. The future is not set in stone. There are many possible alternative futures depending on the actions we take today. Even if we choose to do nothing, it will still affect our common future.



未来のための共通の目標

［1］ 持続可能な開発目標（SDGs）は、より良い世界をつくるための普遍的な目標が集まったものです。2015年の国連総会において全加盟国が合意しました。SDGs は、環境、社会、経済の 3 つの分野で、先進国と発展途上国の双方が取り組むべき世界的な課題を明らかにしています。重要なことは、この目標が政府機関だけではなく、企業や NPO、マイノリティ、若者など多様なグループによって作られたということです。SDGs は、すべての人を代表し世界中の人々のたくさんの声に基づいています。


［2］ SDGs は私たちの未来を変えることを目的とし、2030 年の世界のビジョン（未来像）を反映しています。これらは17の目標とそれを達成するための169のターゲットで構成されています。各目標は、気候変動や貧困など、さまざまな重要な問題に焦点が当てられています。これほど多くの異なる問題にこれだけの規模で取り組むことは不可能に思えるかもしれません。しかし、SDGs を「グローバルなものの見方（視点）」から読み解いてみると、どの目標もいくつかの特徴を共有していることがわかります。鍵となる３つの視点と、それらが SDGs とどのように関係しているのかを見ていくことにしましょう。


［3］ 1 つ目の視点は「つながりをつくる」ということです。SDGs で取り上げられている目標はすべて相互につながり合っています。そのため、17 の目標を全部一度に取り組むのではなく、むしろ 1 つの目標から始めて、他の問題に取り組むための入り口とすることができます。世界が直面している問題は非常に複雑なため、まず、それぞれの問題が地球規模でどのようにつながり合っているのかを理解する必要があります。また、これらの問題が私たちの日常生活とどのようにつながっているのかにも気づく必要があるのです。つまり、世界の問題を解決するためには、自分たちのことを受け身な部外者として考えていてはいけません。その代わりに、私たち自身が問題の解決に向けて日常から一歩ずつ踏み出していくべきなのです。


［4］ ２つ目の視点は「違いを認識する」ことです。SDGs は、「誰ひとり取り残さない」差別のない世界を目指しています。あなたや私から、弱い立場に置かれた人たちのグループ、動物たち、さらには環境に至るまで、すべてを包括するホリスティック（全連関的）なアプロー チを採用しているのです。これを実現するためには、私たちは多様性を受け入れ、どのような問題にも複数のものの見方があることを認識する努力をすべきです。SDGs で取り上げられている問題には、そのどれにも１つだけの「正解」はありません。私たちが世界の難題に取り組む中で、さまざまな可能性のある答えが生み出されていくのです。


［5］ 最後の視点は「未来を見据える」ことです。SDGs によれば、問題についてただ学ぶだけでは十分ではありません。世界を変えるためには、私たち一人ひとりのライフスタイルや価値観を見直す必要があります。私たちが直面している問題は克服が難しいものばかりなので、異なる背景を持つ人たちが集まり、共通の目標に向かって努力しなければなりません。 未来は変わりうるもので何も確定してはいません。今の私たちの行動次第で、選択可能なさまざまな未来が待ち構えています。たとえ、私たちが何もしないことを選択したとしても、私たちの共通の未来に影響を与えているのです。

Sally:
Oh, look, there’s an SDGs poster on display in our train.
James:
SDGs? What’s that?
Sally:
You’ve never heard of the SDGs? It stands for “Sustainable Development Goals.”
James:
That sounds familiar… do they have something to do with helping people in poverty?
Sally:
That’s part of it. But it’s so much more than that. We learned about them in my Global Studies class last week.
James:
Interesting. So, what kind of goals are there?
Sally:
Well, there are a lot of broad goals like making clean water available to everyone and promoting equality. But I think the point is to encourage people to think about how they are connected to each other and to make small changes to their daily lives.
James:
Small changes? What do you mean?
Sally:
My teacher gave the example of plastic waste. It’s a huge problem for our environment. The SDGs encourage positive actions to reduce it, such as removing plastic straws from coffee shops.
James:
That sounds like a fantastic idea. What are some of the other goals?
Sally:
To be honest, I don’t remember all of them.
James:
Well, we have a little time before class. Let’s look them up!

あれ、見て、電車の中に SDGs のポスターが飾ってある。
ジェームズ：
SDGs ？ それ何？
サリー：
SDGs を聞いたことがないの？ 持続可能な開発目標のことよ。
ジェームズ：
聞いたことがあるような気もするけど…それって貧困に苦しむ人たちを助けることに関係してない？
サリー：
それも１つね。でも、それだけじゃないのよ。私たち、先週のグローバル・スタディーズの授業で SDGs のことを習ったの。
ジェームズ：
おもしろそうだね。それで、どんな目標があるの？
サリー：
そうね、きれいな水をみんなが利用できるようにするとか、平等を推進するとか、大きな目標がたくさんあるのよ。でも、大切なのは、どんなふうにみんながお互いにつながっているのかを考えたり、毎日の生活に小さな変化を起こすように促しているかってことだと思うわ。
ジェームズ：
小さな変化？ どういうこと？
サリー：
私の先生は、プラスチック廃棄物を例に挙げていたわ。それは、私たちの環境にとって、とても大きな問題なのよ。SDGs では、プラスチックごみを減らすために、積極的なアクションを起こすように呼びかけているの。例えば、コーヒーショップからプラスチック製のストローを取り除くこととかね。
ジェームズ：
素晴らしいアイディアみたいだね。他にはどんな目標があるの？
サリー：
正直言うとね、全部は覚えていないの。
ジェームズ：
だったら、授業の前に少し時間があるね。一緒に調べてみようか。
