2025 Fall Semester: Japanese Affairs Ⅰ (日本事情Ⅰ )

Designed for international students, this course, taught by Associate Professors Oseki and McManus, offers an engaging introduction to Japanese culture. Through interactive lectures and off-campus visits, students explore Japan’s customs, traditions, and traditional crafts firsthand.

Yukata

As part of the course, we had the wonderful opportunity to welcome an instructor who taught us how to properly wear a yukata. We learned about the rich history of Japanese attire and explored various elements of traditional culture. To make the experience even more engaging, we also took part in a hands-on session where we discovered the versatility of furoshiki and learned creative ways to use it.

Visiting an elementary school

The students visited Tokiwa Elementary School and spent time with the Grade 5 students there. First, they listened to presentations given by small groups about the Japanese school system, including classes, school events, and school lunches. Then it was our students’ turn to present about their elementary school back home. The Japanese students were very intrigued by the differences in schooling systems around the world and took many notes. They also shared thoughtful reflections at the end.

During lunch, the students were divided into small groups, giving them a chance to talk with Japanese students and try a Japanese school meal. They got to see how lunchtime is organized in Japan and taste some foods they hadn’t had before. After lunch, everyone played dodgeball, completing about four rounds. By the end, everyone was smiling, and it was overall a great experience.
