On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the Department of Communication held a special English exchange session with 14 students from Langara College in Canada. The Canadian students were visiting Japan for a short study program. Fourteen Tokiwa University students also joined the session.
The theme of the session was “Getting to know each other’s country and culture through fun English exchange.” After a short ice-breaking activity, students worked in small groups with two Tokiwa students and two Canadian students. They prepared questions about each other’s countries and cultures and talked together in English. They changed groups several times, so they could meet and talk with different students.

【教育活動】カナダからの留学生との特別英語交流会を実施
2026年5月20日（水）、コミュニケーション学科では、カナダのランガラカレッジから短期研修で来日した学生14名を迎え、特別英語交流会を実施しました。当日は、マクマナス准教授が担当する英語コミュニケーション科目を履修している本学学生14名が参加し、ランガラカレッジの引率教員2名、国際交流語学学習センターの職員2名も参加しました。
今回の交流会は、「英語を使った楽しい交流を通して、お互いの国や文化を知る」ことをテーマに実施しました。アイスブレイクとして簡単なコミュニケーション活動を行った後、本学学生2名と留学生2名の4人グループに分かれ、お互いの国や文化について事前に考えてきた質問をもとに、すべて英語で交流しました。学生たちは自己紹介から始め、質問やその回答を通して会話を広げました。また、あらかじめ用意した質問だけにとらわれず、自然な流れで会話を楽しみながら、積極的に相手に質問するようにしました。グループのメンバーを何度か入れ替えることで、より多くの学生と交流する機会を設けました。
交流会は終始和やかな雰囲気の中で進み、双方の学生にとって、英語を実際に使いながら異文化コミュニケーションを体験する貴重な機会となりました。本学学生からは、「英語で話すことに自信がついた」「これからも英語の勉強を頑張りたい」といった感想も寄せられました。
このような活動は、コミュニケーション学科における英語コミュニケーション教育の特色の一つです。英語学習は、文法や語彙を覚えたり、試験のために勉強したりするだけのものではありません。実際に英語を使ってコミュニケーションを図る機会を通して、これまで学んできた英語を実践的に活用するとともに、異なる文化を持つ人々とコミュニケーションをする自信をつけることができます。そして何よりも、完璧な英語でなくても、相手と深く有意義なコミュニケーションを楽しむことができるということを、学生自身が実感することが大切です。
